Commented Issue: External RSS site goes down causing Webpart to shut down page [21059]

I just had an external site providing a feed go down and this caused the page in which I had the feed displayed to showed the web part problem page. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi there,

we just installed your FeedReader webpart in our SharePoint Services. We have two instances on out page displaying two different feeds. There is one problem we encountered: The path to the new symbol replacing the default RSS symbol is not stored. I don't know if we misconfigured something or if it's a bug? Please let us know if you have a solution!

If I open the default.aspx in SharePoint Designer and have a look at the source code, there is an XML tag called "PartImageSmall" which containts the correct location to the symbol. I think, the problem relies on those lines in RSSWebPart.cs:

Sebastian -- correct, it is essentially hard-coded -- you *can* go into where the web part is deployed (look at the resulting URL for the web part and just put new icons in that folder with the same name as a work around.

I have just separated the main intranet site and my sites into a new web application. Since then, the RSS feed reader does not work properly. I tried to install it again, but it says that it is already installed. The Feed Reader web part does not show up if I try to add a web part to a my site page and existing web parts have an error

http://rssfeedurl does not appear to be a valid RSS feed. If the feed is valid, please ensure your proxy server settings are correct if you use a proxy server.
Error returned from FeedReader: The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden.:SmilingGoat.Syndication

Do I need to reregister the web part somehow?

What was the error, if any? It is a server-based component that emits HTML...I don't understand where Firefox would have a problem? I just tested in my environment and had no problems.

Hello,

I installed this feed to my sharepoint intranet system and whe Firefox went to the page would not load. I had to disable it for the Firefox users.

I want to change the HTML lines in this web part so that it looks the way I need it to. I'm new to Sharepoint. I'm using WSS 3. It doesn't appear there is a way to rewrite the code within the file (as one does with PHP). Do I have to rewrite the source code, then deploy it to Sharepoint? If so, is there instructions somewhere on removing the existing install of this webpart cleanly so the new version can be deployed?

Commented Issue: Does the web part support ATOM?

I took a quick look at the source code and I do see what looks to be support for ATOM. However the two feeds I've tried both display errors.

http://www.povertylaw.org/clearinghouse-review/atom.xml (this is the one I really want)

Here is the error that's displayed below the other feeds in the web part:

http://www.atomenabled.org/atom.xml had a problem reading the feeds from the URL.

First off thank you Tim for creating the Feedreader and making it available to everyone. We rolled it out to our MOSS 2007 environment and it has worked well. However we have ran into an issue with it when adding a 2nd web front end server to the farm. The web part won't work across servers when trying to pull a feed from someone's MySite. I've found from reading your posts that this is expected because of authentication issues. That's fine because we found a work around.

The problem I face now is that the web part was used in many sites to connnect to multiple external RSS feeds. This functionality still works, even across multiple web front end servers. I need to ensure that no one uses the feed reader web part to try and connect to something within the intranet since that functionality doesn't work. The feed reader web part isn't in the web part gallery so I can' t hide it that way. I'm assuming since it is deployed as a solution that's why it isn't in the gallery. I did notice that it shows up under the server web part gallery (its the only one there in fact) but I don't have the option to hide or delete it there.

Does anyone know of a way to make this web part unavailable to users without uninstalling it? I can't uninstall it because it will break in multiple sites.

I installed without a hitch however when I add an external feed to the webpart I get the following error: http://sitenamehere does not appear to be a valid RSS feed. If the feed is valid, please ensure your proxy server settings are correct if you use a proxy server.
Error returned from FeedReader: Index was out of range. Must be non-negative and less than the size of the collection. Parameter name: index:mscorlib

I have placed several RSS feeds including codeplex at http://www.codeplex.com/rss.ashx but alway get the same error. When I point to a Sharepoint list, it works flawlessly.

Any help would be appreciated.

so far I used 3.0.0.0 without any problems. After (Dec 20st) installing dotnet 3.5 and patching to the newest level (windows server 2003) I can no longer access news from the server where RSS FeedRead is installed .(e.g.https://www.mydom.ch/site/_layouts/listfeed.aspx?List=%7B4BCA266B%2D3A43%2D4BEB%2D90EB%2DFAF3A49F7B15%7D).
I decided to upgrade to 3.1.0.1 today and found the same Problem. Besides paching an installing 3.5 framwork I have not changed anythig.
The webpart works perfectly if directed to an externa feed.
The internal feeds work perfectly if accessed through Internet Explorer. Changeing from https to http does change anything.
I have attached a screenshot of the error message.
An clue what's wrong?

Tim, I'm working with Mike (above) - we still have to resolution to why this would not work consistenly in production.

The service account has read access to the list, and its feed. The mysterious thing is that, it works if we refresh the page abt 4-5 times.

So there are 3 behaviors we see:

I found something else, this may be NTFS related to the ACLs - after I installed it the square graphic: square.gif did not display. I had to change th epermissions adding IUSR with READonly access for everyone to see it. If this is a problem for the graphic, maybe this could reflect a security problem with other files installed....

I take that back! It is NOT a malformed RSS feed. EVERYTHING started working after I followed Scott Hanks' fix by disabling the loopback check:

Instructions to disable loopback

regedit, and then click OK.
In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAClick Start, click Run, type L_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa
Right-click Lsa, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type DisableLoopbackCheck, and then press ENTER.
Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.

I have also been having the "unexpected error" problem, but it's only been a problem for some users. It works fine for other users accessing the same page. By accident, I just found a solution that worked for me. I needed to access a SharePoint site from the WFEs to check something unrelated but was unable to because of the loopback check. I disabled the loopback check on the WFEs per MS KB 896861.

A little while ago I went back to working on the error with the RSSFeedReader web part and found that it was no longer giving an error. To see if it was working now because I disabled the loopback check, I enabled the loopback check again. The web part error immediately returned. It went away again when I disabled the loopback check again.

I think the crashing is from malformed RSS feeds. FeedReader works great for:

Hi Tim! Let me start by saying this web part is great, but I have encountered a situation where the RSS Feed dates are formatting as 1/1/0001. I'm using FeedReader 3.1.0.1 on SharePoint Services 3.0 with Yahoo's RSS service. To work around the situation, I have simply turned off the dates property. Any assistance that you or anyone else might be able to provide is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have run this command successfully -- stsadm.exe -o addwppack -filename <path to file> -globalinstall

What would be my next step after running above command? Is 3.x version compatible with Sharepoint 2003 (WSS2.0)?
